Montgomery Botanical Center is pleased to announce the publication of Zamia urarinorum, a newly described cycad from the wetland forests of Loreto, Peru. The species is featured on the cover of Phytotaxa (Vol. 741, No. 1) and the open access article is available here: https://phytotaxa.mapress.com/
Zamia urarinorum is exceptional because it is the first and only cycad known to inhabit permanently flooded, waterlogged forests, where soils remain saturated and inundation can be persistent. The fieldwork leading to this discovery was carried out through a close collaboration between the Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazonía Peruana (IIAP) and Montgomery Botanical Center (MBC), and was partially supported by MBC’s Plant Exploration Fund.
