Ms. Tracy Magellan has headed the Outreach and Communications department at Montgomery Botanical Center since 2008.  Her responsibilities include grant writing and development, volunteer management, and print and website communications.

Ms. Magellan began her botanical career in 1997 while at G. Holmes Braddock Sr. High in Miami, FL.  She was a genetics intern at Florida International University (FIU) working with Dr. David Kuhn in the Botany Department.  She also worked at the Botany Department at FIU for two summers while in college: one summer with Dr. David Lee (1998) and one summer with Dr. Jennifer Richards (1999).

Ms. Magellan received an Associate of Arts in Biology from Miami Dade College in 2000 and a Bachelor of Science in Botany from the University of Florida in 2002.

Upon graduation, Ms. Magellan acquired a position with the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service-Subtropical Horticulture Research Station (aka. Chapman Field) in Miami, FL and worked there for two years (2002-2004) in the Entomology department under the supervision of Robert Heath, Dr. Nancy Epsky, and Dr. Tom Weissling.

Ms. Magellan returned to school and earned a Master of Environmental Science with a focus in Tropical Ecology from Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in 2007.  While at Yale she studied ecology and completed two master’s projects. One on the diversity of lepidoptera in pure and mixed plantation of eight native tree species at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica and the second on cedar swamp ecology in Connecticut and the growth patterns in 15 years.

Ms. Magellan’s training is in Botany, Terrestrial Ecology, Plant-Insect Interactions, and Conservation.
